Thus Spake the Divine - Love And Sorrow

Thus Spake the Divine

Love And Sorrow

The very purpose of birth as human beings is to be kind, compassionate and express love towards all living beings on this earth. The amount of happiness arising out of being kind to all can never be felt by any other act. When we are kind and compassionate towards something or someone, we never feel any other deficiencies in terms of ill health or financial difficulties. The contentment and happiness arising out of love is immeasurable. Such a person lives his life in its complete form. The one who does not show love to others lives a worthless life.

I have said that when we show love to others, we never feel any sorrow at all. However, at a later day, the one on whom we showered love and affection may make us sorrowful. For example, we endow love on a person and one day he leaves us once for all. Or, one day we might go away from him forever. Then, we become very sad and depressed. Thus, happiness of a time may end in sorrow at some other point in time. Then, we feel whether the ultimate result of love is only sorrow. The amount of sorrow we feel is as much as the amount of love that we had shown on the other person. We might wonder whether it is better to refrain from showing any kindness or love to anybody or even remain without any emotions like a piece of wood.

In this universe, love only brings sorrow at some point of time or other. At the same time, in case there is no love towards others, there is no charm or meaning in anyone’s life. How do we handle such a situation? The only way is to develop consistent, unconditional and everlasting love, which will keep us at peace. This means that we should focus our love on something that will never part from us. We must also be confident and feel comfortable that the object of our love will never depart from us for the rest of our life.

Who could be that to whom we can show our eternal love? That will be none other than the Paramatma to whom we can surrender our entire love. Paramatma will never depart from us. Even when the breath leaves our body and we die, our soul will be with the Paramatma. Only that love is permanent and everlasting.

There again arises a question. In that case, can we not show love to any other living being other than the Paramatma, even though they may perish some day or the other? But once we start pouring more and more of our love towards Paramatma, we will realise that there is none other than the Paramatma. In such a state of mind, we would view all those on whom we have earlier showered love as part of the Paramatma. Likewise, we should visualise people of the entire universe as form of the Paramatma and start showering our love towards them. That kind of love will never cause any sorrow to us.

If you cannot see all living beings as one and the same as Paramatma, at least focus on those sages, saints and gurus, who have lived a life of love and compassion, and start extending love towards them. If we surrender ourselves completely to such gurus, the Paramatma would offer his benevolence to us through these holy souls. In that case, if someone closely attached to us dies, wisdom will open our eyes that that person has reached the lotus feet of Paramatma and has unified with Him. We will thus not sink into depression on parting of that person, and our love for that person will remain everlasting without diminishing.
