Thus Spake the Divine

How to reduce the burden of sorrows

We all must attempt to attain the true wisdom about the Omnipotent and Omnipresent Lord Parameshvara (Param Porul). What does this wisdom reveal? It reveals that there is nothing that exists other than the Param Porul (Supreme Being). Only that one Param Porul magnifies and transforms into innumerable forms. If we keep diverting our mind into these forms, it will only result in mental agony and disparities, and consequent sorrows which will persist. If we can dislodge from our mind all these forms and start becoming aware of the One, who is the Source of all these forms, then our thoughts will not wander here and there, and our agonies will come to an end. If there is only one substance that exists, then where is the question of disparity? With that state of mind, we can attain eternal bliss. This state of mind is what we call Wisdom.

Happiness does seem to occur in one’s life. But that does not last long. How can we make the happiness that flows from outside last forever? The one that comes from outside will not remain with us and escape from our hold. In that case, the happiness that it brings will also vanish away. That is how what appears happy at this moment fades away the next moment. Just as how branches in the dense tree sway and thin rays of sun peep through the gap, and the next moment shadow occupies the gap, tiny quanta of happiness peep amidst the worldly sorrows occasionally and fade away. Eternal Happiness is to realise the source of this Universe, the Brahmam.

It is quite natural that all people living in this world will face some problem or the other. Many may think that the rich or those in high positions are living a hassle-free life. With that thought, they would aspire to acquire money and position. If you probe those rich and of high status, then you would know how many traumas they are undergoing. We are just sitting on the bench and if we fall down, there will only be mild bruises, or at the worst some sprains. These rich men live on a terrace. If they fall, there will definitely be bone fracture. The one, who has money and position, over and above the little happiness that comes along with that, is more anxious and worried that his money and position will get snatched away from him. That is why, in this world, no one can claim that he is happy! Like each and every one in this world believes that he is the most intelligent, or the most handsome, or the most honest person, he also thinks that he is the one who undergoes most sorrows of the world.

Sorrows are born along with us. We have sown the seed for these sorrows earlier itself, through the acts of our earlier births. There is no escape from them. But there is a way to endure the sorrows resulting out of our own actions (Karmas) with calm and composure. There is a way of not multiplying our sorrows in the future by way of accumulating our load of karma afresh. As mentioned earlier, wisdom is the means to do this.

Sorrows and traumas will not be felt by mentally ill and mentally inactive people nor does the sorrow stay longer for those people. There will be no feeling of sorrow at the time of sleeping, nor will an individual possess the awareness that he is happy while sleeping. Only the sage remains in the awakened state and experiences the everlasting happiness. It does not mean that he will not have any physical inabilities. But at his heart, there will not remain any trauma. The predicaments of the external world will never at all have an impact on him.

When we pull a pot when it is immersed under the water in a well, the weight of the pot is not felt. But once the pot reaches the surface, it starts feeling heavy. Generally, heavy and bulky trees, which are tough to drag, are dragged through while under water. Similarly, we should submerge all our sorrows into the water of wisdom. Even then, we will have triggers of sorrows. But then, that sorrow will become very delicate and thin, similar to when the pot is beneath the water.
